On Monday, April 12, we celebrated DEAR Day. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read and it originated in Beverly Cleary’s book Ramona Quimby, Age 8. DEAR Day is celebrated every year on Cleary’s birthday, April 12.
Our theme at Aldine Ninth was “Reading Gives You Superpowers” and everyone was encouraged to participate by wearing a superhero shirt.
At 10:00 everyone literally dropped everything to read for 10 minutes. Our students learning from home were also encouraged to read with us. Some students chose to read library books. Others chose books from their classroom libraries. Many students chose to read e-books from the Harris County Public Library with their new library cards! We even had teachers who chose to read to their students as part of a mini lesson. Office staff also took this opportunity to read.
